Love Thinks No Evil

“Love thinks no evil.” (1 Corinthians 13:5)

To be a son or daughter of God is more than what we say or do outwardly. It reaches into the hidden places of thought, where no one else sees. Even when our words are restrained, a quick judgment may rise in the mind — “this is ridiculous,” or “that was stupid.”

Scripture reminds us that love does not even think evil. True holiness is not only about bridling the tongue, but about having the heart so renewed that such thoughts lose their hold before they ever form.

Jesus pointed to this same truth: “You have heard… ‘Do not murder,’ but I say to you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.” (Matthew 5:21–22). The sin is not just in the outward act, but in the inner spirit that breeds it.

Paul echoed this when he wrote: “We take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5). To live as God’s children is to walk in such union with Him that even the reflexes of our thoughts are surrendered to love.

This is the path of perfection Jesus spoke of when He said, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48). Not a flawless humanity, but a wholeness in love — the kind of love that sees as God sees and thinks as God thinks.

As sons and daughters, we are not only called to avoid evil actions or words, but to embody the Father’s heart until even our hidden judgments are transformed into mercy. This is where adoption leads: a life where the thoughts of our heart agree with the love of God.
