Dividing Line

His Coming Exposes Hearts

"Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to 'set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law'; and 'a man's enemies will be those of his own household.'"— Matthew 10:34–36

Jesus is not saying that God delights in family division or commands it. Rather, He is revealing that allegiance to Him can bring division within families because not everyone responds to Him in the same way. His presence exposes the true condition of the heart and, at times, calls for a loyalty to Him that even those closest to us may not understand.

That same pattern continued through the disciples. Their mission was never to create division, but to reveal Christ. As they carried His presence and proclaimed His Kingdom, hearts were exposed. Some received Him with joy. Others rejected Him. Division was not their purpose; it was often the result of people's response to Christ.

The same is true today. We carry the Spirit of God wherever we go as ambassadors of Christ.

Wherever Christ is truly revealed, hearts are confronted with a response. Every person must decide how they will respond to Him. Our task is not to interpret every reaction, but to faithfully reveal Christ. The resistance we sometimes encounter is not always a rejection of us personally but may reflect a person's response to Christ being revealed through us.

When truth challenges deeply held beliefs or ways of living, people may avoid the conversation. They may dismiss what is being said, change the subject, speak over us, or create distractions rather than honestly engage with what has been revealed. We should not take this personally.

As time goes on and maturity sets in, Christ is revealed more clearly through those who have walked the walk and allowed the sword to divide their own soul. As the life of Christ is revealed more clearly through us, our old lives fade into the background.

Our task is not to convince people of Christ, but to reveal Him. Whether people receive Him or reject Him is a matter between their heart and God.

That is the Christ life.

Our calling is not to win an argument, but to faithfully reveal Christ and leave the response in God's hands.
